Unfortunately, motion sickness is something that many have to deal with while traveling. Whether you’re traveling in a car, in an airplane, on a boat or on a train, some people are simply more prone to getting sick while in motion. This type of sickness can come in many different forms from nausea and vomiting to headaches and extreme dizziness. This can be especially difficult to deal with if you enjoy traveling and visiting new places. If you are planning an upcoming vacation or getaway, there are some steps that you can take in order to prevent or minimize your motion sickness symptoms.


Watch What is Consumed Before Traveling


Before traveling, it is especially important to watch what you consume. This includes both food and beverages. If there are certain foods or drinks that typically make your stomach a little uneasy, be sure to avoid them before traveling. Excessive liquid and food should also be avoided, as a full stomach can lead to vomiting if you commonly experience motion sickness. In some cases, heavy and spicy foods lead to motion sickness in individuals.


Drink Water

When preparing for your trip, be sure to drink enough water so that your body stays hydrated but not too much that it will be sloshing back and forth in your stomach for hours.


Anti-Nausea Medication

There are many different over the counter anti-nausea medications available on the market today. Dramamine and Bonine are just a few of the most popular choices. These medications are recommended for short trips. If going on a longer trip, a doctor may be able to prescribe you a stronger, long lasting anti-nausea medication such as a patch that is designed to prevent motion sickness. Be sure to take your medication at least one hour prior to leaving for your trip.


Sit in the Front

If traveling by car, it is recommended to sit in the front seat in order to minimize your motion sickness symptoms. The backseat is the last place you will want to be if you are experiencing motion sickness during your travels.


Open a Window

Opening a window or an air vent can help to reduce your motion sickness. By simply taking in some fresh air, you are more likely to feel less nausea and dizziness.


Choosing Where You Sit

Although it can be difficult to choose your exact seat while flying on traveling by train, try to take advantage of this option if at all possible. Choose a seat that is known to have the least motion. For example, the middle of the airplane over the wing experiences less motion than the back or front of the airplane. On a cruise ship, you may opt for a low, center cabin rather than one higher up on deck. You will also want to avoid sitting backwards from the direction that you are traveling in. If traveling by train, try flipping your seat in the opposite direction so that you are facing forward.


Things to Avoid

If at all possible, there are some things that you will want to avoid in order to prevent motion sickness. Do not read while in motion, as this can make your sickness worse. Stay away from strong food odors that can cause you to vomit. Also try to avoid others who are experiencing motion sickness. In an enclosed space, hearing others who are getting sick can make you feel ill as well. Invest in a pair of earplugs so that you are unable to hear those suffering from motion sickness and keep your vision focused on one spot.


Motion sickness is a devastating condition, however it is something that can be easily trated and avoided using the advice above. There are, however, other illnesses/ injuries that occur while travelling that could be harder to avoid. Make sure you have travel health insurance for the medical emergencies that can occur during a vacation.
