Dubai is a rich jewel in the Middle East most associated with plush hotels, man-made islands, exclusive property, palm trees and luxurious living. However, tourism has started to shift away from rich jet setters and high-flyers to families and couples of all social status. Alongside the glittering shops, golden beaches and ultra-modern streets is a wealth of sporting activities which make the most of the versatile landscape surrounding the city. Here are some activities which Dubai has to offer.

Indoor skydiving

At the iFly in Mirdif City Centre is the first indoor skydiving centre in the United Arab Emirates. Adults and children can experience the thrill of skydiving within the safety of an indoor setting – perfect for beginners or fearful flyers. The sensation of being in mid-flight comes from an enormous wind tunnel; spread over 773 square metres which produces high-strength flumes of controlled currents. The experience is so safe at iFly Dubai that children from the age of 3 can experience their first flight.

Creekside Park and Children’s City

Creekside Park is a children’s haven situated between Al Maktourm and Al Garhoud Bridge along the coastline. Past guest reviews have raved about the amount to do at the park from bicycle rentals, cable car rides, an array of playgrounds and horse and camel riding. For a little extra, you can also interact with dolphins and other marine life at the Dubai Dolphinarium or stargaze in the planetarium. There is also a yacht club across the water which you may like to explore during the course of your stay.

Fun in the dunes

Outside of the city are breathtaking sand dunes as far as the eye can see. Explore these dunes with an exciting array of dune tours supplied by travel agents and companies in the region. There are activities to suit everyone from sand boarding and sand driving to horse trekking and camel riding. If all that horse trekking in the desert has sparked a new enthusiasm for the equestrian life, there are plenty of horse riding beaches in the UK including the Studland Beach in Dorset, Holkham Beach in Norfolk and Northumberland’s Holy Island. It is important to note that you will need horse insurance, so look online to find the best deal for you.

Water sports

The glistening Dubai coastline plays host to a range of water sport activities including snorkelling, diving, and water skiing. There are a number of training facilities including the Pavilion Dive Centre, Scubatec for advanced divers and Freestyle Divers which offer courses for beginners upwards. Some also offer snorkelling trips to UAE diving sites. Musandam is a popular hotspot for divers and snorkelers whilst many beach clubs including Club Mina, Dubai Marine Beach Resort and Spa and Nasimi Beach offer beachside activities including volleyball, tennis and water sports. Unwind in one of their luxurious bars, spas and restaurants after a day in the sun.
