New Zealand, or Aotearoa to use its Maori name, is made up of two islands; the North Island and the South Island. The country has often lived in the shadows of its more assertive neighbour Australia, but those who have ignored the claims of this beautiful land, will have missed out on all it has going in its favour.
Just because over 30 per cent of the country’s population live in the Auckland metropolitan area in the North Island, this does not mean that the rest of the country is not worth visiting.
In fact, it is when you venture further from the urban areas of the country, you start to experience the amazing wonders New Zealand has to offer. Of course the place was Peter Jackson’s choice for the home of Middle Earth as he looked to find the perfect location to shoot the Lord of the Rings and now The Hobbit series of films.
If you have managed to see any of these productions, this should give you some idea of the varied landscapes we are talking about. There is certainly more to New Zealand than a visit to the set of Hobbiton and some of the other prime spots where filming took place, but it is because of this natural beauty that the country was chosen as the ideal place to make these blockbuster movies.
For adventurous travellers this is a country that will not disappoint. Most people flying in to New Zealand will do so by landing at Auckland. This has been described as one of the world’s most liveable cities. Even as a suburban setting, Auckland is still 70 per cent rural, which accounts for the fact that the “City of Sails” is a great destination for water sports and skydiving. It is also somewhere people visit to take part in rock climbing and mountaineering amongst other activities.
Whatever your reasons for visiting New Zealand, you will find this is such a welcoming country. Many British people have decided to migrate here due to the quality of life and the generally mild climate. Top value flights can be booked at all times of the year, so keep your eyes peeled for the latest deals.
From great tourist spots like Tauranga and the Bay of Plenty to Christchurch and the alpine lakes, plentiful vineyards, majestic mountains and glacial valleys of the South Island, the home of the kiwi bird, and national symbol of the country, is a remarkable place, somewhere you won’t forget in a hurry.
