took a holiday,” sang a young Madonna, “it would be so nice.” And she was right. But how should you take your vacation? Are you a land lubber, or would you enjoy being all at sea? Here, we’ve rounded up the pros and cons of each form of vacation so that you can plan your next adventure.

Cruise pros, overland travelling cons

Know the cost

Working out a daily budget on a cruise ship is pretty easy, as much of what you’d usually buy is already accounted for. Food, accommodation, and of course transport, are all covered, and you could easily enjoy a cruise without spending very much at all on board. By land, there’s lots more budgeting to be done on a daily basis, which can sometimes be a headache unless you plan with military precision.

All catered for

On land, finding somewhere to eat three times a day can be a chore, whereas on a cruise ship you know exactly where to go. There are still options to choose from, however, so all members of the party can enjoy their favourite meals.

Varied activities

Thanks to the wide variety of pursuits on board a cruise ship, it’s easy for everyone to do what they enjoy. Dad wants to read a book but the kids are desperate to play tennis, and Mom has her heart set on a spa treatment? No problem. The variety means much less squabbling over which activity the family will do each day, which can sometimes be the case during a land holiday.

Bite-sized tasters

With land holidays, you usually have to choose just one destination unless you plan to do lots of driving during the holiday. But with a cruise, you can visit a number of different places and get a feeling for each. Imagine the range of souvenirs!

The food

If you’re holidaying on land, not only do you have a wider choice of food, but you can choose not to return to a particular restaurant if you didn’t enjoy your meal, or if the food wasn’t suitable for you if you have certain dietary requirements. On a cruise ship, you’re stuck. And even if the choice and quality are good, you don’t have the opportunity to sample the local cuisine.

Time to explore

Though, as we mentioned earlier, a land holiday usually involves visiting just one place, this means that you can explore it fully. On a cruise, you generally aren’t allowed very much time to immerse yourself in a place, and the time you do have is spent with a huge amount of people

Fellow travellers

If you’re sociable, cruises can be a great way to meet new people. The problem is that if you happen to dislike those people, there’s not a great deal you can do about it. On land you can escape fellow holidaymakers with relative ease, even if they’re your neighbours in your hotel, but on a cruise that can be more difficult.

Travel sickness

Of course, we can also get travel sick by car, but if it gets really bad there’s usually an option to stop for a while. On a cruise ship, however, you can’t just get off for a bit if you’re feeling peaky. There’s no controlling rough seas, so if it gets choppy you’re going to need a cast iron stomach or some anti-seasickness tablets.

Which will you choose? Whether you decide to go for a cruise or stay on land, we hope you have a fabulous time! Enjoy your vacation!
