Over the last decade cruise ships have changed. They are more like floating towns, offering an array of different activities that it is just as fun to stay onboard as it is visiting destinations and seeing the sights. From tutorial classes, where you can learn to cook or learn another language, to activities like rock climbing, surfing, swimming and dancing, there is something for everyone onboard a cruise ship.

The usual activities onboard are swimming and sunbathing, whilst you can also spend time relaxing by shopping or using the spa. Whatever your fancy is, you can do it onboard. The 2009 launch of the Oasis of the Seas, on Royal Caribbean, even includes the first ‘at-sea’ zip-line. You have to wonder, what will be the next thing a cruise ship will offer?

There is so much to do onboard a cruise ship that you will always find yourself with some sort of activity that will keep you entertained. Here are the types of programs and amenities that you will find onboard a cruise ship that will keep you busy:

These are some activities you can do on cruise ship

The Daily Bulletin

Every day is different onboard a cruise ship, and that is why a daily newsletter is delivered direct to you at your cabin each evening. You will also get a daily newsletter when you arrive onboard, so you can jump straight in to the cruise experience. In the daily bulletin you will find a schedule for the next day’s activities, which will offer a number of different activities in which you can participate in. You will also find movie listings, for your cabin television, the ports of calls and other destination information If you have children, and wish for them to join one of the many onboard children’s clubs, they will also have a daily bulletin that will breakdown what they will be doing each day.

Daytime Offerings

As cruise ships will try to cater and appeal to all different sorts of people, with different tastes, preferences and interests, there will be a wide range of activities onboard that could be right for you. Activities may include pool games and wide ranges of sports catered for, classes where people can learn different skills or enhance their own and other entertainment where travellers can dance, listen to musical performances or watch the latest movies.

There tends to be more available for people to do on sea days, as opposed to days where the cruise ship will be in port at one of your many destinations.

Of course, these activities are purely optional, and if you want a day, or entire cruise, to laze around the pool, have spa therapies or just enjoy the food and drink, you are entitled to do so.

Each cruise ship offers something very different, so it is important that you research which cruise ships, and the activities and entertainment they offer, will be best for you. In addition, if you have children, each cruise operator offers different children’s programs with varying age range groups. Again, it is important to do your research before you book. However, it is not just the equipment that is modern, you will also be able to appreciate the stunning ocean views from the comfort of the treadmill. The more modern the cruise ship, the more modern the equipment. Some cruise ships even have a boxing ring and kinesis walls.

If working out on the different gym equipment is not your thing, maybe exercise classes are. These are offered in separate rooms, and the classes are usually run either in the early morning or early evening. There are also a wide variety of different classes you can take, and participate in. Most classes are free; however some you will have to pay extra for, so it is worth researching this before you book your cruise. You will likely find the exercise classes detailed on your daily bulletin.

If you would prefer the ambiance of the spa, as opposed to working up a sweat in the gym, then you can indulge in a number of spa treatments that are available onboard. These differ from cruise ship to cruise ship, both free and paid therapies, so check out what is available before you book.

Like a town, your cruise ship will offer you special offers at different places for different activities, so check out your daily bulletin for discounts of treatments.

Evening Entertainment

Most of the above make great day time activities, but what about the evening’s entertainment?

Cruise ships take on a different life after dark, and most are compared to a Las Vegas experience. Casinos are always a hive of activity, with people playing poker, blackjack and using the slot machines. The lounges onboard a cruise ship often feature singers and live bands, giving you the chance to enjoy a drink, some food and to sing your hearts out when your favourite songs are played. As time drifts towards the later evening and early morning, the DJ and disco kick in, meaning you can dance the night away.

The staff onboard your cruise ship will be busy rehearsing their big production, which is usually held at the ship’s theatre. The Broadway production will feature state of the art lighting, elaborate costumes and a wealth of talent, from the singers, dancers and other performers.

If musicals don’t hold your interest, do not fear. There are plenty of comedians, magicians and other performers that are onboard to entertain you.

Think you have talent? Cruise ships are great at offering their passengers the chance to perform themselves, by running karaoke as well as a number of talent shows whilst you are onboard
